What We Treat

Neck pain treatment in Hillsborough.

The shoulder check you stopped making. The ache that climbs from your collar to the base of your skull by mid-afternoon. It’s fixable, and it starts with a cause-first evaluation, not a guess.

Sound Familiar?

Does this sound like you?

  • Backing out of a parking space on mirrors alone, because turning to look costs too much
  • Waking up with it locked to one side and writing off the whole day
  • A headache that starts at the base of your skull around 3pm, every workday
  • Pins and needles running into your thumb while you scroll in bed
  • Two pillows, then three, then none, and still no way to lie that works
  • Rolling your shoulders in a meeting every few minutes without noticing you’re doing it

Why It Happens

Neck pain is a symptom. Something causes it.

Your neck holds up your head all day and never gets a vote in how. When it hurts, it’s usually some mix of four things: joints in the mid-neck that stiffened and stopped sharing the load. A nerve root getting crowded and sending symptoms into your arm. Deep neck muscles that quietly switched off after a strain or a car accident. And a mid-back and shoulder blade that stopped doing their share, so your neck picked it up.

Here’s the part most people get wrong. They treat the spot that hurts. But the neck is often just the loudest link in a chain that gave out lower down, which is why a massage buys you an afternoon and the ache is back by Thursday. A cause-first evaluation finds the link that actually failed. And you didn’t put this off because you were careless. You put it off because the day still needed running, and a stiff neck felt survivable. It is survivable. It doesn’t have to be your normal.

The Honest Truth

Waiting on a neck doesn’t make it wait on you.

If you keep waiting

  • The guarding spreads into your jaw, your shoulder blade, and the top of your back
  • Headaches stop being an occasional thing and start owning your afternoons
  • You stop turning your head to check, and that is a habit that gets expensive behind the wheel

If you start this week

  • You know the actual cause by the end of visit one
  • Hands-on relief starts before you leave the building
  • You get a plan with an endpoint: a real one, not an open tab of visits

Nobody regrets starting too early. Every week, someone in our clinic says they regret waiting.

How We Fix It

The same four phases. Built for your neck.

Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for a neck.

From visit one

Pain

Calm the pain down.

Hands-on work on the stiff mid-neck joints and the muscles guarding them takes the edge off, starting your very first visit.

Once the pain settles

Prime

Get your motion back.

Targeted mobility restores the rotation you’ve been living without, and gives a crowded nerve the room it needs to settle.

Once motion returns

Perform

Make it strong enough to trust.

Deep neck and shoulder blade strengthening rebuilds the support your head has been going without.

Before you are cleared

Prevent

Return better than before.

Your desk, your sleep position, and the way you carry load get tested against a real week before you’re cleared: that’s the endpoint, not just another appointment.

I came to him a few months after a car accident with pretty severe whiplash, and I was still in a lot of pain. He stuck with me through the tough days and helped me slowly build my strength back.

Questions, Answered

What people ask before booking for neck pain.

Sometimes it’s part of it, but it’s rarely the whole story. A pillow can aggravate a neck that’s already irritated, which is why swapping it helps for a few nights and then stops helping. If sleep position were the only problem, one good night would have fixed it by now. We look at the joints, the nerve, and the muscles that hold your head up, then tell you where the pillow actually fits in.

It usually means a nerve root in your neck is being crowded or irritated, and that often responds well to the right treatment. It also deserves a proper exam rather than a guess from a search bar. You get that exam one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, every visit, and if anything we find belongs with another provider, you’ll be told straight away.

No referral. North Carolina has direct access, so you can start without one. Imaging usually isn’t the first step either, because scans of pain-free necks routinely show the same age-related changes that get blamed for symptoms. Your first visit is a full 60 minutes, one-on-one, and you leave it knowing what’s driving the pain and what happens next.
